Roadmap

Sciebo Roadmap

On this page, we publish information about the things we plan for Sciebo in the future.

Short-term

  • Implementation of BSI IT Baseline Protection. To better assess sciebo’s data protection level, the service will be secured according to the BSI IT Baseline Protection standard. The existing security level will be documented, and potential improvements will be implemented. This process will take place in the first half of 2026.
  • Update to Nextcloud 32. In addition to the usual improvements to stability and usability, there are new collaboration features. For example, content can now be shared from more apps with other users, even from other instances. The update is expected in April or May 2026. We are currently waiting for a bug fix. More information about the release can be found at https://nextcloud.com/blog/nextcloud-hub25-autumn/

Medium-term

  • Update to Nextcloud 33. According to Nextcloud, this release brings significant performance improvements for large installations like sciebo. Currently, this release is not yet enterprise-ready, so we are waiting for a later minor release. If possible, we will implement the update in August or September. More information at https://nextcloud.com/blog/nextcloud-hub26-winter/
  • Migration to new hardware. To ensure capacity for future growth, sciebo is being migrated to new hardware. The vast majority of this process will be carried out transparently in the background. Due to its scope, the process is not expected to be completed until the end of 2026.
  • A data management solution for sciebo, bridgit (https://sciebo-rds.github.io/), will soon be available. bridgit focuses on data annotation and export to external repositories.

Long-term

  • Improvement of the Overleaf integration in sciebo. The Overleaf integration in sciebo is currently running on a relatively old version of the Overleaf software. To provide additional features, we are working on migrating to a newer version. Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to predict how long this process will take.
  • Improvements to account management. We are currently working on aligning account durations more closely with university memberships. This will eventually eliminate the need for the currently required renewals. We are also investigating whether logging in with university credentials, instead of separate sciebo credentials, is feasible.

Ongoing

  • Desktop and mobile client updates. We will continue to release new versions of the branded clients as soon as they are available and no bugs are found. We are currently awaiting version 4.0.9 and hope to distribute it in week 17.
The branded iOS client is still awaiting release but should be available soon.
